Well.. well.. Today I
promised myself to have it all!
I did not go for work...... I was feeling a bit tired.
I decided to hang out with a friend though. Assoom is a very
dear friend :) until now, I did not find someone with such a heart...
We had lunch at Wafi Gourmet Restaurant.. my food was hot and yummy...
I ordered hummus with meat and pine seeds + shish barak with
vermicelli rice + fattoush. My drink was fresh orange juice.. & after
that we went to a coffee shop to chit chat and have some sweets :) I
craved a very tasty ice cream called Monte Cristo which made me feel
like I was in paradise.
Once I reached home, I delved my face
into the book and decided to finish reading the last 200 pages no
matter what!
I loved the title...... it really attracted me. The letter NOON in
Arabic is very tempting. and when it is written in Kufi font, it
really gives a more
tempting look. It is also the beginning of a whole sura in the holy
quraan...
BUT, in the story NOON means something else.
another thing which made me buy the book was that I knew it won the
Kafafis Award.
In
the 21st century in Egypt, the narrator Hathor, the Egyptian goddess
of love, music, motherhood, and joy, is back to narrate the story of 4
friends Sara, Dunya, Noura, & Hussam, who are suffering from some
aspects in life, and trying to find solutions by answering the
questions which come from within. Questions such as "Who am I? Do I
love what I am doing? Does this seem to be the love I've always
pursued?" Hathor is trying to give hints to the friends.. she plays
the role of their echoes and tries to guide them to reach the
righteous path!!
I did not like the style at all, for it is extremely strained! and if
you don't want to go through some explicit contents, then don't even
try to look into it. I also did not like the translation of English,
Indian, and other poems to Arabic. it was too stacky.. it lost its
taste!
the story is unusual, but not beautiful and so unrealistic.... and a
bit heavy on religion.. didn't touch my heart at alllllllll, and made
me think that the author is extremely blunt.
The author leaves us with an open ending, which is okay, but it makes
me feel how fragmented the novel is, and how the author couldn't come
up with something more creative. If she struggles to put a proper
ending, how does she want the reader to grasp the concept of a goddess
being able to solve our problems in this century...
eeew I really didn't like the idea of it
all.
it is also a very slow read.
.................................
